The Italian-built NH-500MC is a version of the MD500, produced under licence by Breda Nardi. The aircraft formerly known as MM81000/GF-76 was in use with the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Customs Police).
Codenamed ‘Project Black Sea’, the team set out create an homage to notable US Army aircraft ‘Star 41’. The MH6 ‘Little Bird’ of the 160th SOAR (Special Operations and Aviation Regiment) or ‘Night Stalkers’ played a crucial part in ‘The Battle of Mogadishu’ in Somalia in 1993. This decommissioned aircraft was purchased in August 2017 and shipped from Florida, USA, where it arrived in the UK in November. Starting in December 2017, the restoration and conversion project spanned 8 months and was carried out by the Three Sixty team in Bristol. A time consuming but key part of the project involved sanding down layers of paint back to bare metal. Next came sourcing several missing parts, such as the rotar hub, benches and skids. Followed by adding the signature ‘Night Stalker’ black paint finish and decals. The completed aircraft was finally unveiled at the War & Peace Revival show in July 2018.
